The National Organization for Marriage has launched a campaign against a gay-friendly Republican running for the U.S. Senate in California.
The automated robocalls against former congressman Tom Campbell target his fiscal policies as well as his support of gay marriage.
"The explicit message of this campaign is: don't vote for Tom Campbell, because he supports gay marriage as well as raising taxes," Brian Brown, the organization's president, said in a statement. The organization aims to reach 609,000 likely Republican primary voters, according to The Sacramento Bee.
The vote is scheduled to take place on June 8. Campbell faces former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, who supported Proposition 8 in 2008, which rescinded marriage rights for same-sex couples in the state. The latest poll by the Public Policy Institute of California has Fiorina ahead with Republican voters with a 25%-23 lead over Campbell.
