As the primary election for California's contested Senate seat draws near, conservative gay group GOProud has chosen businesswoman Carly Fiorina as their candidate.
Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett Packard, faces former congressman Tom Campbell, who GOProud has deemed too liberal to represent the Republican Party against standing U.S. senator Barbara Boxer, a Democrat.
"The more Republican primary voters have learned about Tom Campbell, the more it has become clear that his nomination would be a disaster for the GOP," GOProud executive director Jimmy LaSalvia said in a press release.
Campbell has also been the target of one of the leading antigay groups in the country, the National Organization for Marriage. NOM launched an automated call campaign criticizing his fiscal policies and his support for gay marriage.
Fiorina says she believes "in the sanctity of a marriage between a man and a woman" but supports civil unions.
