The first historical marker to recognize an LGBT person in Ohio has been destroyed by vandals, according to the Dayton Daily News.
The marker recognized writer and poet Natalie Barney, who identified as a lesbian. Barney was born in 1876 in Dayton, where the marker stood.
The marker was created by the Greater Dayton LGBT Center and the Ohio Historical Society. LGBT Center members insured the marker because they expected vandalism, so it will be replaced.
Barney was known for feminist writing and published a book of lesbian poems, titled Quelques Portraits-Sonnets de Femmes.
