Salt Lake City police were notified Friday morning that the sign for a cafe at the Utah Pride Center was vandalized with an antigay slur.
"We realize that often times the purpose of these actions are to cause widespread fear among the members of our community," Valerie Larabee, the center's executive director, said in a statement Friday. "That is why today we are speaking out. This will not be swept under the rug. We will not be scared into silence by acts of intolerance."
Larabee told Salt Lake City Weekly in a video (below) that while local LGBT residents have come a long way, it's clear that there are "still people who are hateful and intolerant" of people who are different than they are.
The sign for Cafe Marmalade was marked with the word "FAGS." The incident took place in Marmalade, a neighborhood in Salt Lake City known for its prominent gay population.
