Sean Bielat, the young Republican challenger hoping to unseat Congressman Barney Frank in Massachusetts, said that openly gay people should accept the fact that they are prohibited from serving in the military, because short people also are barred.
According to Talking Points Memo, which reported from the Boston Herald, Bielat invoked the military rule that prohibits people under 5 feet 2 inches tall from serving. He supports the "don't ask, don't tell" policy and has been endorsed by gay conservative group GOProud.
"There's no absolute right to serve," he said. "Men under the height of 5 feet, 2 inches can't serve -- I don't see anybody protesting. Where are the people standing in front of the White House, the short guys standing in front of the White House? You don't see it."
"We understand that there's no absolute right to serve in all these other areas," he added.
The Bielat campaign is working on ad for television and the Internet that will portray a gyrating Frank, complete with disco ball scenery, to argue that the incumbent "dances around the issues."
