Rachel Maddow conducted a fast-walking interview with Joe Miller, the Republican candidate for senate in Alaska, who answered questions about his antigay campaign consultant, Terry Moffitt, whether being gay is a choice, and his views on a federal constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage, which he supports.
As The Huffington Post reports, Miller espoused views that were contradictory. He talked about his preference for state control of issues, but said that he would support the federal amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
Maddow asked, "But why should there be a federal role there if it should be a state issue otherwise?"
Miller responded, "Well, my perspective is it is, at the core, a state issue. But there are federal issues obviously intertwined. You've got taxation policy and otherwise that depends upon certain status. And as a consequence of the taxation structure of the federal government, there clearly is a role. But I think that ultimately, as the country becomes more diverse, those decisions have got to be decided at the state level."
