The presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has added his voice to the It Gets Better Project with a video denouncing antigay bullying and apologizing for the silence of many religious leaders on the issue.

ELCA presiding bishop Mark S. Hanson, whose church last year voted to allow gays in committed relationships to become pastors, said he's "listened with pain and shock to reports of young people taking their lives because they've been bullied ... for being the people God created them to be.

"You are a beloved child of God. Your life carries the beauty and dignity of God's creation," Hanson said.
