Joy Behar and Michelangelo Signorile discussed the controversy
surrounding GLAAD's response to the use of the word "tra**y" in a recent
Glee episode.
Last week, GLAAD issued a statement saying the popular and gay-friendly show hit "the wrong note" in using "the defamatory word tra**y" in its Rocky Horror Picture Show episode. Actress Susan Sarandon later said that GLAAD was being too hard on Glee, but the media watchdog organization suggested that reports had sensationalized her comments.
Behar and Signorile, along with author Greg Fitzsimmons, debated the issue Wednesday night, with Signorile stressing the importance of context when considering the word "tra**y."
"It came out of the transgender community, people using it themselves," he said.
On the other hand, Behar sounded more sympathetic to the position of GLAAD that the word "tra**y" is an insult that should be avoided in no uncertain terms. She included their statement on her blog.
