Former U.S. senator and Republican presidential nominee Rick Santorum appeared Sunday on Meet the Press, where host David Gregory asked him what space he occupies in the race.
"I'm someone who's been out there for 16 years having the courage to lead on a variety of conservative issues when they weren't popular," responded Santorum, as he ticked off activities on entitlement reform and national security during his time in the Senate from 1995 to 2007.
"I've also been a leader on moral-cultural issues," said the former lawmaker from Pennsylvania and author of the Federal Marriage Amendment known for his vocal opposition to LGBT rights. As a presidential candidate, Santorum has expressed continued support for a federal constitutional amendment against marriage equality.
