An Iowa teenager who died Saturday after he was brutally beaten by unknown assailants had been subjected to antigay slurs prior to the assault, according to witnesses.
The Courier reports that Marcellus Andrews, 19, was taken off life support Saturday night at an Iowa City hospital, one day after paramedics and police officers found him unconscious with severe head injuries in Waterloo.
Witnesses said that his attackers had called Andrews "f****t" prior to the assault early Friday morning.
"I tried to help him up, and then this boy ran back and kicked him in his face," said Nakita Wright, a friend of Andrews. No arrests have been made in the attack.
