Happy Wednesday and last day of September, folks!
Audience Editor Edgar Ramirez here in your inbox with an important story done in collaboration with our sister magazine Them.
An investigation into an alleged gang rape by seven Chi Phi fraternity members at Cornell University has shaken the country, reigniting a decades-long conversation about on-campus sexual assault, Quispe López writes.
The harrowing details, as reported by the student newspaper The Cornell Daily Sun, include the anonymous survivor’s personal account of the assault, but also describe how a group chat of other men in the fraternity allegedly knew about the rapes as they were happening and did nothing.
LGBTQ+ advocates, organizers, and thought leaders are speaking out about the alleged assaults — and drawing a connection between sexual violence, rape culture, and the ongoing attacks on trans people.
From Chase Strangio to other queer and trans voices, the message is clear: struggles against institutional violence and oppression don’t exist in isolation. You can find Quispe's story here.
