Bertil Nilsson’s photographs of dancers and acrobats all over the world remind us that both nature and the male form are thrilling. Read more below.
Having grown up in the Swedish countryside, Bertil Nilsson had spent a lot of time in his early years being outdoors. However, since coming to London in 2004 to work in the film industry, he had had little chance or reason to actually spend time in nature.
From early experiments with dancer friends, Naturally grew into a project about our relationship with nature. Nilsson focuses on the dichotomy between natural and artificial, how what we create as humans can both build on and disrupt the natural order. The addition of color -- limited to red, white, and black -- becomes a visual focus point to highlight the intermingling of body and land. When all of these organic elements come together, there is often something otherwordly about Nilsson's images. Places seem at once recognizable and foreign, transformed by the artistic intervention.
Naturally is published by Canalside Books (UK) and Galerie Wilms (NL) and first released in December 2015. Available via shop.bertil.uk/products/naturally
