Breaking the Binary
This photo project from Los Angeles lenser (and Advocate staffer) Lenny Gerard seeks to capture the identities of genderqueer people, reflecting those determined to relentlessly be themselves in a landscape of hatred and injustice, and bring a positive light to the transgender and gender-fluid community. As there are many shades of male and female, there are endless shades of those who are in between or who abstain from the binary altogether. Through portraits, Gerard seeks to capture the faces of bold genderqueer individuals and the diversity behind them. Photographed in Los Angeles.
If you'd like to be photographed for this ongoing project, reach out to Gerard via his Instagram.
Pictured above is Joey Flamboyant. "I identify as gender-fluid. Both male and female and everything in between. For work I do drag, perform for others, and I do makeup."
