In a year fraught with debate and diatribe, the Trans Pride march in Portland, Ore., highlighted the influence words and definitions can have to both empower and degrade. When the usual haters showed up, they were blocked by de-escalation teams from Dykes on Bikes, PFLAG Portland Black Chapter, and Greater Portland Trans Unity, who drowned them out with songs like "Jesus Loves Me" and "If You're Trans and You Know It, Clap Your Hands.” Disrupting the disrupters, they kept the focus on the message of the rally and on the march, which was led this year by the Portland Two Spirit Society. The Two Spirit Society was also Grand Marshal for Portland’s main Pride Parade on Sunday. Thanks to Denver David Robinson for capturing the day in his photographs.
