Happy Heterosexual Pride Day!

Tina

Just what we needed post-Orlando and in the middle of our legitimate Pride Month: a campaign to mock and undermine LGBT advances and self-determination.

Twitter began convulsing Wednesday morning after an incendiary hashtag started trending: #HeterosexualPrideDay.

Created by an anonymous user named Sam, the hashtag was a response to a question about why straight people attended LGBT Pride celebrations."Direct all tweets of disapproval of this holiday to me and me only," Sam later tweeted, according to the New York Daily News.

Reaction was swift -- and unsupportive. Hundreds of people bashed the trending topic, reminding the Twitterverse that #HeterosexualPrideDay is redundant, insulting, and vaguely threatening.

You tweeted too soon, Taylor! There is another hashtag trending: #whiteprideday.

Also, #HeterosexualPrideDay is far from the first time hateful folks have tried to smear a day reserved for LGBT solidarity. During last year's Day of Silence -- which draws attention to bullying and violence against queer youth in the nation's schools -- students in Pennsylvania held an Anti-Gay Day where they wrote homophobic messages on their hands and clothing and shoved Bible verses in the lockers of LGBT students.
