It's official — the Doctor is coming back, and she's ready to take on gargolyes, time-traveling beasts, and the worst internet trolls. Sunday the BBC announced that the 13th incarnation of its famous regenerating character, Doctor Who, will be played by actress Jodie Whittaker.

As showrunner Chris Chibnall told the BBC:
“I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for the Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The 13th Doctor is on her way.”
Much of the internet gave her a warm welcome.

Theresa May has been PM for a year but it was only today that we got hope for a female role model in society #doctor13

However, some sexist fans were less than thrilled, claiming the casting broke tradition and that a female doctor couldn't drive a toll booth. But some Twitter users struck back.

What, so we're gonna just LET a WOMAN be #Doctor13? Man, you let them make ONE comic book movie and they think they can do EVERYTHING!

Personally, I'm a tad disappointed at the new choice for #doctor13 I really thought it was about time a Border Collie got the role..

To all those complaining so called "Whovains", may I remind you that it was a WOMAN, who first pushed for the shows creation #doctor13

If you're fine with "magically regenerating time-travelling alien" but struggle with "female", have a word with yourself! #doctor13
