Here Come the Brides

As All My Children's Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese (Tamara Braun) head for the altar, executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers signals trouble ahead -- but it's not what you might think.

Two women get hitched this Friday on ABC’s daytime drama All My Children... but not without a hitch. Friday, February 13 -- continued on Monday the 16th -- marks another milestone for the long-running soap: Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel) and Reese Williams (Tamara Braun) tie the knot in the first same-sex wedding ceremony on a soap.

AMC is known to be the leader in LGBT daytime TV. The show led the charge with the introduction of daytime's first lesbian character, played by Donna Pescow, in 1982, followed by the first lesbian kiss in 2003, the first transgender character in 2007, and even a few fizzled gay-male story line attempts in the 1990s.

Coming on the heels of Proposition 8's passage in California, and the recently enacted bans on same-sex marriage in other states, this latest story line is significant. Reese and Bianca are granted a legal union in the state of Connecticut, where marriage equality became a legal reality in late 2008.

But until the gals say “I do,” many Advocate.com readers are keeping an eye on the budding relationship between Reese and her bride-to-be's brother-in-law, Zach Slater. Is AMC not prepared to let the gals walk off into the sunset together? Is there another sexual identity crisis just around the corner? Is a man going to come between these lady lovebirds?

To get the answers, Advocate.com went straight to the top and chatted with AMC executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers. She speaks candidly about the true intent behind the Bianca story line, lays some fears to rest, and previews the Valentine’s Day wedding and a moment that will change the course of Reese and Bianca's relationship. But is it forever?

Advocate.com:Viewer concern among the LGBT community is that Reese will leave Bianca for Zach, and it has angered many who worry that she has feelings for him. How would you respond?
Julie Hanan Carruthers: First of all, it’s not true. I think what’s confused in Reese’s head is she has misinterpreted a friendship. Zach is one of the [few] people who have not kicked her to the curb, so to speak, in Pine Valley. She is a confused, insecure person at the moment. She has never wavered in her commitment to Bianca. It’s solid. Reese has just had a lot of emotional stuff hit. Her family is rejecting and judging her... in both her family and Bianca’s.

However, something happens right before Bianca and Reese’s wedding that is a time bomb.
The night before the wedding when Kendall, Zach’s wife, nails her with a backhanded toast, Reese gets a little drunk, and the person who consoles her is Zach. It’s a moment where she kisses him and then realizes, “Oh, my god, what the heck am I doing? The person I love is Bianca, and the person you love is Kendall. What just happened?” That moment is what unravels the world, and unravels it in a very “soap” way, dramatic and misunderstood, where someone tells somebody and it grows bigger than it ever was. The people who were involved have resolved it. When Reese says her vows to Bianca in that wedding, there is nothing more real. The problem is the audience that watches the show knows somebody saw something that shouldn’t have been seen. They are legally married at the moment Bianca finds out.

....(continued)....I hope you dont misunderstand me....i too am disappointed with how they have treated what i believe is a perfect couple as i believe reese and bianca as characters are perfect for eachother. And yes i do believe breese is a fan favorite couple because if they were not i dont think people would be so eager to express their opinion on the faith of the couple?? Also....i think our opinions probably differ because where i'm from (i know it says sacramento but i'm actually from IRELAND) couples like breese are not such a regular sight and personally watching their early relationship was like a breath of fresh air. So any form of lesbian relationship on television no matter how short lived just gives me reassurance that its out there and i'm not alone in this unbearably small minded country.

Crystal, i completely agree with you that their relationship was not written appropriately what so ever, towards the end. It's just simply ridiculous that a lesbian would kiss a man when she is so clearly in love with her partner but i would rather see them show lesbian couples, show the problems in their relationships, show their love and commitment for eachother than to completely ignore the fact that we exist....I for one think that media has come a long way in trying to portray gay and lesbian relationships in a realistic sense.Yes...of course they have a long way to go and so does a vast amount of people in the world but looking at the tender moments written by heterosexuals at the beginning of breese i have faith in humanity and have hope that one day we'll all be seen as equals.

Eimear, Reese and Bianca acting like a proper couple? What, just because they've gotten to kiss a lot? It's not like we've seen Reese and Bianca spending that much time together or a good love story here. Whether or not Reese and Bianca get back together is not the problem. People are not angry about their breakup. People don't care about their breakup/reunion because they have not enjoyed how this couple has been written. It's all in the comments. This is no perfect couple. And them being perfect is not what we want. It's simply not about that. And the media needs to stop acting like this couple is a fan favorite or that we should be happy about this pairing.

Karen, I spoke of an onscreen wedding for Bianca and Maggie after all. Elizabeth Hendrickson (Maggie) most likely will not be on the soap opera The Young & the Restless for the rest of her life. If Bianca and Maggie reunite offscreen, then this means they can be together romantically when Bianca comes back to the show. If they reunite onscreen, then all the better. Reese and Bianca being allowed to kiss as much as they can does not make up for their lack of love story. It should speak volumes when a lot of people would rather have Bianca and Maggie together romantically over Reese and Bianca when Bianca and Maggie's official romance took place offscreen. We prefer Bianca and Maggie because we saw that romance build over the years, kisses, intriguing obstacles and angst. We knew that couple. It made us root for them. To those who say this is just a soap opera, I say it's clearly not about "just being a soap opera" or wanting Reese and Bianca to have no problems.

As a LOOOONG time viewer of AMC (since Erica was in Pine Valley High, if you must know), I find it difficult to believe that "the powers that be" were committed to a "believable" LGBT storyline. All of their past attempts have been slip-shod at best, and never ran to completion. It's beginning to look like they are only going after "press release" moments rather than to create enduring characters meant to become part of the "PV" community. Kinda sad in this day and age. Please give your viewers more credit than you do! We will watch IF you include us!

I thought that the wedding ceremony was absolutely beautiful. This morning, I saw a segment on CNN dealing with the wedding! It didn't deal with our concerns regarding how the storyline was written. It focused on it being soap's first same-sex wedding. A Focus on the Family rep said that a lesbian wedding is not something people want to see on their TV. Eden Riegel, Tamara Braun and Susan Lucci were interviewed. Crystal Lawson, do you want this Bianca & Maggie reunion to be completely offscreen? You don't want a recast, but Elizabeth Hendrickson is on Y&R. The aspects of the Bianca & Reece storyline that I have been happy with is that we have gotten to see them being affectionate and romantic with each other, and they had them get married.

Heavens to Betsy! It's a soap opera! Happily Ever After endings never last more than a week or so. It's the nature of the beast. I tune into the "valley" as a way to tune out of the very real world I work in. Love the clothes (sometimes) . Please, lighten up and stay tuned

Bianca and Maggie...that's All My Children's true lesbian supercouple... I don't care if Reese and Bianca get a happy ending to their love story. Their love story has been horrible. They got together not long after Bianca and Maggie had ended, Bianca quickly declared Reese the love of her life (when we all know it's Maggie), and then Bianca decided to have a baby with Reese; all this without hardly knowing Reese. They barely know each other, don't really trust each other, and I have seen more screentime between Zach and Reese than Reese and Bianca. So tell me exactly why I should root for this couple? Kisses and first legal same-sex wedding/marriage on an American soap opera? Well, it's not enough! Bianca and Reese should get a divorce -- the first same-sex divorce in American daytime history. And Bianca should go back to Paris and romantically reunite with her real true love, Maggie (no recast). Then Bianca can have a true grand onscreen wedding.

I want to know her intentions regarding Zach and Kendall. Her lack of statements regarding Zach and Kendall's relationship tells me show takes the couple and the need for them to have a well-written, intelligent, believable story for granted. Zach and Kendall never seem to be a priority unless the goal is to always try to break them up. It's disrespectful to the actors and their fans. She said that she's telling the Zach and Reese story for the non-gay audience. Well as a straight woman, that's not the story I ever wanted to see. Believe it or not, straight people want to see gay stories too. Bianca is a character people are invested in, period. The fact that she's a lesbian never mattered to me. The sexual orientations of the characters won't matter as long as the story is well written and makes sense. This one isn't and doesn't. I would like a happy resolution for both couples. I hope the show is committed to resolving all sides of the story in a positive way.
