Prom Canceled Due to Lesbian Couple

CYNTHIA STEWART X390 (ACLU) | ADVOCATE.COM

An Alabama high school prom has been canceled following a lesbian student's request to bring her girlfriend. Cynthia Stewart, a 17-year-old junior at Tharptown High School, asked her principal for permission to bring her girlfriend to the prom and was told no. The principal then forced Stewart to remove a sticker she was wearing that read “I am a lesbian” and told her she didn’t have that much freedom of speech at her school.

The ACLU has since demanded that school officials allow Stewart to bring her girlfriend to the prom and refrain from further violating her First Amendment rights.

Stewart is a member of her school’s prom planning committee, had personally raised over $200 for the prom, and created the theme her classmates had chosen for the dance.

This story has several large holes. The complete and correct account can be found on the ACLU website under the headline "Alabama School Bars Lesbian Student from Attending Prom with Her Girlfriend." A startlingly similar situation occurred in Missisippi and was also covered by the ACLU.

Yes there is a Tharptown High School in Franklin County Alabama not only did she get denied prom but others have in this same town because of inter-racial relationships. Gary Odom the principal got fired from phil campbell high school in phil campbell alabama for stealing and cheating on tests. He was not suppose to be principal, teacher, etc. for the school board but in Alabama we have the "good ol' boy" rule. Prom is going to take place and they are going together bravo to her and her aunt for standing up for her!! Not all people from Alabama are close-minded rednecks...I am definitely not!!

I love these young gay kids. They are awesome and are going to be the reason we have full equality under the constitution in the future. When I was a kid it was enough to be accepted--but this new generation seems to be keenly aware of the difference between acceptance and equality. Good for her.

Your heading to this story is totally wrong and misleading. The prom wasn't cancelled due to a lesbian couple, it was cancelled due to the bigotry and intolerance of the principle.

Way you go girl. Show to people that you are exist and need to be respected. Say NO to discrimination. This is your life, make the best of it. Follow thru with lawsuit against the principal and school. You're not a second class citizen and protected under the law.

I have one thing to say to this girl. Get the hell out of Alabama next year and don't pay one more red cent of taxes to those rednecks. Move to the West Coast, or go North to Chicago. Don't end up like the girl in Boys Don't Cry.
