LGBT Activists Slam Minnesota Governor

National Center for Transgender Equality executive director Mara Keisling blasted Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty’s recent fumbling comments regarding his state’s long-standing nondiscrimination policy — one that includes gender identity protections in housing, employment, and public accommodations — while OutFront Minnesota Public Policy Director Monica Meyer says it's "unfortunate, but not surprising" given his track record.

In a Monday interview with Newsweek headlined “Tim Pawlenty Gets No Respect,” the governor, who voted for the 1993 antidiscrimination law as a state legislator, called the statute “overbaked.”

“I regretted that vote later because it included things like cross-dressing, and a variety of other people involved in behaviors that weren’t based on sexual orientation, just a preference for the way they dressed or behaved,” Pawlenty, a Republican prospect for the 2012 presidential ticket, said. “So if you are a third-grade teacher and you are a man and you show up on Monday as Mr. Johnson and you show up on Tuesday as Mrs. Johnson, that is a little confusing to kids.”

The NCTE's Keisling said that Pawlenty “ought to be ashamed of himself.”

“He knew exactly what he was voting for,” Keisling said. “In the interview he was asked how his views have evolved. Well, they’ve evolved to become less inclusive. He’s pandering to the far-right wing of his party, and picking on teachers who devote their lives to kids. ... It’s cynical politics at its worst.”

Pawlenty’s comments come during continued delay in the passage of a transgender-inclusive federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Only 12 states and the District of Columbia currently ban employment discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity.

In the interview Pawlenty also stated his opposition to medical benefits for same-sex partners.

"This is a tactic he’s taken before to appeal to a conservative base in the Republican Party," Meyer told The Advocate. He has handed out paperwork saying, 'this is my biggest regret, this vote.' It is really unfortunate, but not surprising. It is so sad when we watch candidates and elected officials try to pander to some kind of fear in voters.”

The governor has not yet responded to a request by The Advocate to clarify his statements.

It is time we take a stand with our elected officials and their obvious lack of fortitude on our issues. This is true at both the state and federal levels. In the late 1980’s, Time magazine did not publish much about GLBT issues. Many of us participated in a campaign designed to change their focus – we used the subscription postcards included in the magazine as a tool. We wrote “NO GAY NEWS, NO GAY $” on the cards and mailed them back at their expense. Lo and behold Time slowly began to publish more news on GLBT issues and people. I believe we need to follow a similar process with our currently elected officials and those seeking election and our support; including umbrella political groups, like the Democratic National Committee (DNC). When we receive a solicitation from them, we should write “NO GLBT SUPPORT, NO GLBT $” and mail it back to them either in their postage paid envelope or donate a stamp of your own. We must do this each and every time they ask for monies. This will let them know who we are and that we will not be taken for granted any longer. If they want our money they need to support our rights and issues.

This is TOTALLY political! Pawlenty is trying to burnish his 'conservative' credentials in hopes of a 2012 presidential run. If the Repubs consider him too 'moderate', (a 4-letter word to the right-wing); he won't have a chance at the nomination. He is prepared to say and do ANYTHING to appeal to those in power within the party. He's a political whore; pure and simple.

A disgrace that such a pathetic little man should represent the Republican party. I don't agree with the party on the majority of issues, but this is not what the party has always been. It has degenerated (much like, but to a greater degree, the Democratic Party) into a agglomeration of sniveling, pure propagandists.

I think it's interesting how he tries to drive a wedge between transgender people and gay people. He doesn't seem to regret the sexual orientation part of the bill, only the part that gives rights to transgender people. His remark might resonate with some gay right-wingers. "I'm not against gays, just transgenders." I don't think that will help him with the right-wing, though, who think all gays are pedophiles.

He regretted the vote later because it didn't fall in step with his right-wing base. He's afraid that vote will come back and bite him when he runs for president in 2012 (a race he has no chance of winning). Tim Pawlenty is a disgrace.

Well, she's right of course, but like every other right-wing pol, he has no shame and never will.
