Marriage Licenses in Washington, D.C.!

DC Marriage Licensesx390 (HRC) | Advocate.com

Same-sex couples in Washington, D.C., arrived at the superior court this morning to apply for marriage licenses and certificates on the first day of eligibility.

According to The Washington Post, about 11 couples had gathered outside the court building by 7 a.m. Wednesday in chilly weather with a light rain, with the crowd growing to around 45 couples when the marriage bureau office opened at 8:30 a.m. Couples were handed numbered tickets to indicate their place in line.

The marriage equality law takes effect in D.C. Wednesday. The earliest any wedding can be performed is Tuesday, because the court needs at least three business days to process the applications.

HRC's Back Story blog has more photos of some of the first couples to arrive at the courthouse this morning. See a video from The Washington Post below

A prayer that the newly wed couples demonstrate to the world the strength, unity, love, and structure salient in a human family encompassed in marriage. So that no fundamentalists can easily say that homosexuals are destroying the American family.

First off congratulations to those in DC! I married my husband in Toronto in 2006. It was such a joy to go to the Toronto city hall and be treated with full respect when we filed for our marriage license. We where married in the Toronto' City Hall wedding chamber with three of our closest friends. We expected a courtroom with a judge, but were so very surprised that this room was decorated with flowers. This was the happiest day of our lives! We later celebrated our wedding in Phoenix with our friends and family with a huge reception. To this date our only dissappointments have been the marriage ban passed here in Arizona. I hope to still see the day we win federal marriage equality.

And thanks to the unconstitutional DOMA these (and all same sex civil marriages in the US) are not recognized by the federal government to which we pay taxes. Anybody ready to start the revolution yet?
