Constance McMillen, who filed suit against her Mississippi high school after it canceled next month's prom rather than let her attend with her girlfriend, appeared Friday on the CBS News Early Show.

McMillen, 18, and attorney Christine Sun from the American Civil Liberties Union spoke with host Erica Hill about the school’s move and their effort to fight it. The young woman said some peers have told her, “You ruined my senior year,” but she does not regret her decision to challenge the antigay policy.

Unfortunately, these days actions from GLBT rights opponents are numerous and unsurprising. Instead, what's amazing in this case are Constance's interests and capabilities. At this point, sure she has growing support with a lawyer and the media, but how impressive that she is articulate, level-headed and unwavering. Congratulations to you, Constance. Stay strong and stay safe. Thank you for your ambition and inspiration.

To all of the high school students who feel that Constance has : "ruined their prom"---take a look at what is going on here. Constance has stood up to those in Mississippi who have taken American Constiutional freedoms away from one of its citizens. This is an event to remember not in a bad way but in a positive pro-Constitution manner. Did NONE of these students not read their U.S. History homework? This is history in the making. As far as the prom goes; all any of you have to do is go and organize a prom at another location that is sponsored by an "equal rights for all" sponsor like McDonalds or Starbucks or WalMart. They all have to comply in their national chains and would perhaps be very willing to help find a way to get the class that Constance is part of a lovely prom night. You all may be surprised at how many of the students come with same sex dates once the prom is away from the school property. I hope she wins $ a million!!!!

If LGBT americans had as much of the guts and hear that Constance does in her left toe nail it is without a doubt we would have equal rights by now. We need to stop laying back and voting for politicians for them to do the trick for us. Howard Zinn said that NO act of social progress has come through the halls of congress, but through activism of the people. And guess what, donating to the HRC is not activism. Gay rights will leap 10 fold if the HRC collapses. We need to have the courage of constance and engage in direct action and challenge homophobes right to their face. The HRC could learn a few lessons from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and learn what REAL activism is. Joe Solmonese is a FRAUD. Constance is a HERO.

Thanks Phil, I prefer to write them at their physical address because a letter that they have to open (and read at least the first sentence) is a lot more time consuming for them to destroy than an e-mail that can simply be deleted by one click (which they probably don't even open to read at all).

This is an astounding story, and this girl is truly amazing. While this is by no means the first of these battles to be waged in America, it is impressive that she is waging it in Mississippi. I wish her all the best and hope that she is able to bring her girlfriend to a wonderful senior prom.
