CNN Panned for "Ex-gay" Segment

A CNN segment Tuesday about the effort to repeal a dated California law that encourages the state to study “cures” for homosexuality has outraged activists and bloggers. Watchdogs say the cable news network mishandled the issue when host Kyra Phillips asked whether homosexuality was a “problem” in need of a “cure,” and booked guests including discredited “ex-gay” therapist Richard Cohen.

“Homosexuality: Is it a problem in need of a cure? Grabs your attention, doesn’t it?” asked Phillips at the opening of the segment, which appears below.

Critics assailed CNN for giving the idea a national platform.

“Instead of discussing the merits of the proposed bill and why ‘finding cures’ for being gay don't work, Phillips and CNN gave credence to this bogus ‘therapy’ and allowed ‘ex-gay activist’ Richard Cohen to spew his lies and promote new research (old studies that have been discredited),” said activist blog Queers United.

Also included among the guests was California assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, lead sponsor of the repeal bill. The assembly’s public safety committee approved the bill Tuesday.

The National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association found fault primarily with the lack of gay voices in the segment.

“While the segment includes balance and Phillips handily challenges Cohen, the bigger problem is that the segment about whether homosexuality can be cured doesn’t feature any actual homosexuals,” wrote Michael Triplett on the organization’s React blog. “While Lowenthal is a worthy representative of the opposition and a wonderful spokeswoman as an ally, it’s always problematic when these kinds of conversations go on without having the people most effected by the legislation — gays and lesbians — represented on the panel.”

This is disgusting. Can you imagine the harm that such misinformation could impose on a young gay man? Mr. Cohen is an evangelical Christian, with a counseling psychology master's degree from Antioch University. The last time I checked, one need a Psy.D. or a Ph.D. in order to act as a psychologist. NOT TO MENTION, any true therapist doesn't impose their own beliefs on their clients. Though this is sufficient information to discredit this quack, I am upset with CNN for even deigning to put someone so ignorant and with so little credibility on TV. I don't say this because I don't share his opinion, I say this because he is touting his opinion as scientific fact. It's all false information. I'm tempted to use a different expletive, but I'll exercise restraint for the sake of young readers who have access to this website.

And, just by the way, there are MILLIONS of psychologists out there that can help you better understand your sexuality if you are not comfortable with it. And if you're not comfortable with your sexuality then, gee I don't know, YOU'RE NOT THAT SEXUALITY. Hence, if you're not comfortable with being gay....YOU'RE NOT GAY. However, many of these "ex" gay people were gay, are gay, and will always be gay. If they are ashamed of it, they should be encouraged to love themselves and embrace who they are- not told that who they are is wrong and it is their fault, which is what is being done behind the widdling little men with the smiles who are actually religious fanatics with political motivations. And another thing, I'll have you know that gender and sexual identity are factors that develop in childhood whereas sexuality develops in puberty. So if anyone "should understand" change at a more conscious level, it is lgb folks, not transfolks. Thank you.

YOU AREN'T BORN GAY, YOU AREN'T BORN TRANSGENDERED. Birth has little to due with sexual orientation, gender, and yes, even sex. these things are both natural though because you develop them subconsciously throughout childhood, without the choice. I never CHOSE to want to change my sex. Sex is a matter of physical association. I should clarify; I am a Transexxual. This means that I physically associate with having a vagina and boobs while not having them. I didn't CHOOSE this association because my church told me to (80% of "Ex" gays); I didn't CHOOSE this association because I felt ashamed of my natural feelings (practically all of Ex-gays) which have been, to clarify, of the female, not male sex; and I don't plan to change my sex through illegitimate, harmful practices that won't actually change my sex (like Ex-gay therapy is mostly damaging and FAKE and doesn't actually change secual orientation). So don't tell me I should understand because of who I am.

to Davya: you claim that "transgenderism is a natural development that expresses itself in that form," and yet refuse to accept that the wish to be "ex-gay" is as natural and as expressive. you were born a man, you're unhappy with your sex (for either genetic or social reasons), and you wish to change yourself. these people are born gay (for either genetic or social reasons), are unhappy with themselves and wish to change their sexuality. i would never try to augment my sexuality (or my sex, for that matter), but i'm not going to judge those who do. you, as a transgendered individual, should be MORE understanding, considering you're both individuals who are uncomfortable with their own genetics.

Isn't this the same guy who helped bring about that law in Uganda? Rachel Maddow slammed him. Shame on CNN for even thinking this guy is a credible source.

Is it just me? Has CNN just turned into an extension of Fox news? In the old days you could take CNN for real news, now it's more of the tabloid National Enquirer on Cable. Sorry National Enquirer, I did not mean in insult you. I really think that Rupert Murdoch was the worst thing that ever happened to CNN. I am waiting for CNN to start the UFO segment about all the mothers that gave birth to an aliens and what they are wearing. Now, if I want news, I turn to the Canadian BBC for my News and my local weather channel for what else: the weather. Good bye CNN, you make Fox News look intelligent.

I guess it won't be long before CNN et al will be turning to NAMBLA and Rev. Phelps of Topeka for their panel of experts on this topic.

I too have suspected that Mr Cohen "hates" his bisexual urges. I have known a few who were mystified by this aspect of themselves. But by what right does he put forth this conversion junk? Does he hate his Jewish roots as well? Just wondering.

As for Frank O'Hara. I happen to want to change my sex. But that's because Transgenderism is a natural development that expresses itself in that form. Don't you ever fucking compare my natural form to some expression of Liberal philosophy entailing the idea that you should choose and change the way your dick swings. Gender and sexuality do not develop genetically; but they develop naturally throughout childhood. Trying to change that is called Social Utopianism and it is commonly the realm of the street corner.
