Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, the Malawi couple sentenced to 14 years in prison last week for holding a public engagement ceremony, have been placed in separate prisons after spending months in the same facility.

According to CNN International, Monjeza was moved from the facility where the couple had been held since their arrest in December.

“It was not clear why Steven Monjeza was moved from Chichiri prison, where he had been serving time with his partner, Tiwonge Chimbalanga,” reports CNN International. “The pair was sentenced last week to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of gross indecency and unnatural acts.

“Though in separate cells at Chichiri, the men were able to see each other briefly 'from time to time,' said Peter Tatchell, a London-based gay rights activist who has been advocating for the men.”

A Malawi-based human rights campaigner told CNN International that Monjeza was not the only prisoner moved to another facility and that he would learn more when he visits Monjeza in the new prison Thursday.

It is a sad sick bit of extra pleasure gained by keeping them apart. The Gay community are Naiive on such matters. So much hatred directed worldwide towards America. Yet extreme cruelty towards Gay and Lesbian people in Iran and other Muslim countries iand sadly most African countries s ignored. You cannot but feel compassion for the poor people in some of these countries. Yet often tehre is plenty of wealth for the few. But I will certainly not be helping people who are cruel to Gay and Lesbian people. There are so many people in need in the world. My help will go elsewhere.

Shane has every right to express his views on the physical separation of the Malawi couple while they are imprisoned. Personally, I believe that, 'duh' makes an arrogant observation of what this couple faces regarding their 14 year imprisonment. Many recall that before the case went to trial, potential sentences were discussed, along with a 14 year sentence including hard labour. The majority of the continent of Africa has no concept of the Western phrase "Gay Rights". Homosexual acts are an abomination; period. The couple's 14 years imprisonment is due in part because of the intervention of International LGBT groups, pressure on the Malawi government, and assistance of start-up LGBT rights groups in South Africa, a part of the continent that is beginning to grow beyond its limitations, accepting the expression of human differences; human sexuality included. No one yet knows for certain what awaits this couple, but they face the scourge of their families and death if set free.

duh, of course they were separated. the country put them in jail for being together, we weren't under the assumption that they would be allowed to live out their lives together in jail.
