GOProud Breaks Boycott?

DOUG MANCHESTER HYATT X390 (FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

Gay Republican group GOProud has scheduled its San Diego political fund-raiser at Prop. 8 supporter Doug Manchester’s Grand Hyatt, even though Manchester is the target of an active boycott.

Manchester gave $125,000 to the campaign pass Proposition 8, prompting a boycott by the group Californians Against Hate. Last May he attempted to donate the same amount of money to gay groups in exchange for an end to the boycott and offered gay groups vouchers to stay at the hotel.

GOProud’s July 31 Don’t Tread on Us reception will feature “national radio talk show personality Tammy Bruce as the program's MC. The event will benefit GOProud, the nation's only political organization for gay conservatives and their allies.”

"We understand that Mr. Manchester has apologized for his support of Prop. 8 and has made a substantial monetary commitment to the LGBT community,” GOProud executive director Jimmy LaSalvia told The Advocate. “We believe strongly that the gay community should be in the business of winning new friends not making enemies."

Earlier this month Manchester submitted a proposal to the San Diego Unified Port District to trade down to a minority stake in the hotel and give majority control to Hyatt Hotels. His company would gain interest in two hotels, in Atlanta and Chicago.

@Frank, you are within your right to comment on the event. However the "clumsiness" of GOProud for choosing a hotel that IS under an active boycott is just unbelievable. You might want to read the article again too because it doesn't mention gay democrats at all. You insulted and compared gay democrats to George Bush as if gay democrats are to blame for goproud breaking the boycott. So who is demonizing who? And then make fun of our community spirit too? Community spirit would be goproud not doing an event in a hotel that gave thousands of dollars to take away my rights. As for the republican fighting for my right to marry, you mean Meg Whitman? You might want to "dig deeper" like you said and find out how much support she gave to prop H8. As for teabagging, you realize they goproud had a teabag throwing event right? You have no argument dude, just give it up. None is going to drink your kool aid.

@Frank - Go Proud is a national organization having a national conference at a Cali hotel. The article was in a national magazine thats why I thought I would comment all the way from Atlanta. Also as a life long Democrat I now am seeing that perhaps I should vote for the person rather than the party as the party hasnt allways been on our side... you may side with lesser of two evils and rest easily on that I but I choose to dig deeper. Also, not a teabagger but do find it interesting that since I don't agree with the majority I'm demonized and relagated to the self hating or teabagging side of things. Thanks for the community spirit and support of diversity. Hope the Republican fighting for your right to marry in Cali wins...even if don't..peace.

@Ethan, your teabagger name calling and rhetoric style won't work here darling. Most gay people here are college educated and wont buy anything you say just because there are "good" republicans (where?) and bad democrats. Seriously? Are you like 12? LOL! And you posting the same thing 20 times just proves my point. There is no argument honey. Democrats might not be perfect, but having a 2 party system doesn't give us a lot to choose from. One party chooses to follow the bible, the other not. Guess who has the best chances to accept us and has a proven record supporting us? Besides, you live in Atlanta. Why are you giving advice for a boycott of a hotel here in Cali? Atlanta doesn't even have domestic partnerships that I know of. Maybe if you voted democrat once in a while you could at least have that.

Let's be clear, $100000 of the $125000 that Manchester offered to the gay community was in hotel credits to LGBT groups. It's pretty obvious that GOProud is taking advantage of that money. They're selling our souls for their own benefit. Maybe they will have Mary Cheney speak. She worked for Coors to get the gay community to break that boycott. GOProud are Aunt Marys indeed!

There are good republicans and bad democarats. you cna't just tow the party line you have to pick and choose the right people. there's a good republican fighting for your rights toward on prop 8...you want to just pull him out of court and stone him.. We need to wise people and not just black and white...

Typical republican whore who will do anything for the right price... Actually, if you think about it, this might be progress. Usually GO Sad will drop it's pants and bend over for anyone for free if the tool is big enough. They couldn't even give the Dole campaign $1000.00 in 1992 without it being thrown back in their faces. Stay dignified GO Sad...

GOProud=traitors, traitors, traitors. Not one of them should ever be invited to brunch or get laid again!!!!! Seriously, folks, unless the rest of us completely shun and marginalize these people, they will continue to damage our community and make it even more difficult for us to achieve equality. If you willingly associate with one of these loathsome individuals, you're helping them fight against our best interests.
