Pride Around the World

Hey, sailor! Pride in Berlin on June 19.

It’s been 40 years since people gathered for the first gay-pride parades in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. In the years since, gay pride has spread around the world. Check out photographs of some international festivals held over the past month.

@Robbie--It was a great Pride parade wasn't it!?! I was down to visit friends and to be at the parade (from Vancouver, BC). Boys and girls of all sexes, let me tell you, it was one helluva Pride parade. Ours is coming up the beginning of August -- everybody is welcome. I really enjoy flipping through these parade pictures every so often; they really are fun. There are two particular pictures that do get to me: the first is the celebration at the Brandenberg gate in Berlin - for those of us who remember West-East Berlin and the wall coming down - it's fabulous to see the Pride parade there; the second is the picture of the Gay flag being paraded through Moscow - it seems to be a very long flag. All the others are great to see; it makes me really proud of them.

Ah, it was the fifth Pride in Moscow, according to Andy's article, which I just reread. None sanctioned by the state. They would have been arrested if they'd been caught.

Actually, this year's Moscow Pride was not the first... I think it was the third? All have been against Russian law. This year was just the first year there were no beatings or arrests. The activists had to be super clever and stealthy to pull that off. Chicago activist Andy Thayer went over to help and had a complete report up at Huffington Post. It's a great story that should have gotten even more coverage than it did. Here's a link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andy-thayer/how-russian-gay-activists_b_594517.html

Quote - This picture is not helping our fight to repeal DADT! What were you thinking Advocate???!!! Our enemies watch this website like a hawk and that picture would be the perfect ammo for them! Unqote I don't see anything wrong with this pix, and the enemies of freedom and progress, who have yet to be sent to the hell they deserve, will one way or another come up with crap to support their cause. We should hand our talibangelicals and the church of Molesters R US over to the taliban. who in this case would do the world a favor.

Congratualations to everyone who participated in PRIDE celebrations around the world! You look fabulous! My partner and I will be riding on one of the floats during the Seattle Pride parade this coming Sunday. Looking at these PRIDE photos, I am always struck by how much we have in common with gays around the world, than I have with my actual siblings (four brothers), with whom I hardly speak with anymore. For my four siblings, attaining equal rights for lesbians and gays is not that big a deal, something that they imagine may happen in the next 50 years or so, but what's the rush? I get frustrated that they don't seem to understand, and we grew up together, but it is not of critical importance to them. But I am certainly out to them, and I try to discuss this all with them, even if it is an uncomfortable subject for them. If you can, see us at Seattle Pride this weekend! Viva La Pride!

Don Charles is, in fact, Maggie Gallagher. And yes, the first gay pride parches were in 1970, on the first anniversary of Stonewall.

Looking at all this over-the-top revelry and exhibitionism, you'd never, ever guess that millions of us live in daily fear for our lives. Somehow, bare flesh, ball gowns and crazy eyeglasses just fail to convey the urgency of our equality struggle.

Hey Mike Scott--So we'll win rights if we just hide and be conservative? And anyway, it's a parade. Gosh, parades aren't any fun if everyone dresses down. Mike, come all the way out of the closet.
