Census Will Miss Some Gay Couples

CENSUS 2010 X390 (2010.CENSUS.GOV) | ADVOCATE.COM

A new survey finds that while 99% of U.S. same-sex couples participated in this year's Census, one in seven won't be identified as such in its findings.

The results come from the Williams Institute for Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law. Not all gay couples will be counted in the survey because some chose to identify as roommates, others felt their relationship couldn't be defined, and some found their living situation made it impossible for them to identify as couples.

"Same-sex couples are identified in Census data when one partner is 'Person 1' in a household and designates the other as a husband, wife, or an unmarried partner," according to a press release from the Williams Institute. "The survey found that one in 10 individuals in same-sex couples opted to identify as roommates on their Census forms. An additional 5% of couples are not identified because they live in a household where neither partner is Person 1."

Some respondents told the Williams Institute that they didn't identify as part of a gay couple because of confidentiality concerns, and some opted out because they protested the fact that the Census did not allow people to specifically identify as LGBT.

Other findings of the survey included that 14% of couples identified as married and 15% identified as part of a civil union or domestic partnership. "More than 4 in 10 of those couples in legal relationships do not live in states that recognize their marriage, civil union, or domestic partnership," the institute noted.

And what is David's response to these points? Referring me to the CB website.... LOL. It would be like if somebody questions the actions of the IRS's collection practices and their application to law would ask the same IRS for help on how to defeat them. Laughable. In the eyes of David the government can do no wrong... This is naiveness to the infinite power. It looks like he has not read enough Advocate articles to know that government has NEVER been the gay person's friend still to this day.

    6) David seems to forget that Census data was used to collect information on Japanese-Americans during WWII under the Second War Powers Act of 1941 (an old version of the Patriot Act, one law that David foolishly refuses to admit that it ever existed LOL!) 7) He fails to see that government cannot produce anything and only consumes hence the given away of such personal information to strangers only serves the purpose of the government not of the people that the government collects data from. 8) He fails to understand that businesses and non-profits DO NOT use the census data in practice because it can be up to ten years old and hence they prefer to use date from focus groups, and market research that has more accurate information on their target consumer base 9) He does not care about privacy since he is willing to give you any and all of his personal information, in other words he is willing to give up his liberty for a bit of "security" and in the end not getting either. Pathetic.

Another reason why David the child should not be taken seriously is because 1) He says that gays are not human because the CB does not count them as gay or partnered, 2) He fails to understand that in the Perry and Log Cabin cases the courts have determined that gay people's sexual orientation SHOULD NOT be a factor in law and governance in accordance to the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment, asking for such information on a CB form defeats such purpose, 3) He also fails to understand that collecting such data DOES NOT fulfill the actual constitutional purpose of the census to count the number of people that live in a given district, (US Constitution, Art 1 Sec. 2) 4) He also fails to see the dangers of surrendering such personal data under the full force of the Patriot Act, which the FBI uses to combat so called "terrorism." Under a homophobic administration this would not be a good idea. 5) He needs validation of his sexual orientation hence why he supports the CB.

@ David, "Is the neighbor next door brewing bombs? Is there a mosque in the next block? Is the Tea Party crowd starting the revolution without you?" -- And you want me to take seriously? Why the childishness? Are that stupid in not being able to write coherent logical arguments? This is why I do NOT take you or your comments seriously because you have totally FAILED in proving anything only that you are loathing malcontent who has a very vivid imagination.

In 30 years or so, I bet researchers will confirm that some 10 to 20 percent of the population is gay. Some of the misconceptions pushed by fundamentalists is that American society is catering to some 1-3% of the population and that all these concessions are not fair. But of course, the fundamentalists do not count all the married gays out there. I know more closeted, married gay men than I do "Out" gay men. In most rural areas, it is still troublesome for gays to be "outed" or identified in public. But there are services that are really important to gays. In some places like Ireland, there is a special ministry to serve isolated gays in small communities. We don't have that here, but we should. Maybe even business loans, like they do for other minorities. And we might get these if people knew how many gay men and lesbians actually live in a community. The federal dollars and election votes follow the numbers, and if gays are not counted, they are not deemed important enough.

My partner and I had no choice in how our census was recorded. Due to the high Hispanic population in this part of Washington state (Apparently lots of Hispanics don't trust any government agency, even if it helps the community.), a census worker showed up and filled out the form for us. When we protested, he said that he had no options but to put us down as "roommates." There were no other options, he said. But I know he was wrong, and we would have filled it in differently had the Census Bureau mailed us the forms.

@ Pepa.. and anywhere here can go to the Census website too... and can look at the history of tracking gay life in America, rampant homophobia, cherry-picking history, etc. Man, you've lost your mind. Is the neighbor next door brewing bombs? Is there a mosque in the next block? Is the Tea Party crowd starting the revolution without you? Gee, I wonder if things have changed since 1941? Ya THINK?! Grab your gun, your Bible, and bash some gays... have a nice Sunday. Read previous instructions on how to get out of your hole...

@ David, and this is the funniest comment so far on these boards: "You cannot even answer questions that are FACTS found in the public domain (or do you simply have your own set of facts?). Again, drugs, therapy, a nice stay in an institution, getting a boyfriend, coming out of the closet.... You have so many choices...." I mirrored ALL of your comments fromn the previous pages so WHERE ARE THESE FACTS? The Second War Act of 1941 is PUBLIC DOMAIN, the Patriot Act is as well... yet this is why I have to go this far to show you that so far you have not contributed anything to the discussion. Anybody on here can google, wikipedia, yahoo, everything I said, this is all documented in various articles etc. And David chooses to ignore all that and instead retorts to acting like a little kid, make up hilarious stories but serious inquiry, discussion, or debate? Nope. Not going to happen with this guy.

@ David " CHILL dude. We're all sorry the census did not count your blow-up Tucker Carlson doll as your "partner" or your imaginary gay friends (is one of them a big rabbit named "Harvey?"). The REST of us are going to continue to fight for the rights of inclusion for our community in the census. BTW..What about the 'everyone who disagrees with me is a 'lib' argument' below. Cannot answer it, or will not? And NO one could read your comments and respond by trying to "be funny." You're too sad for that." Where are your SUPPOSED serious questions about the census? "Yeah, we're ALL fantasizing about you, too. Drool by drool. Who wouldn't be attracted to foaming self-hatred busily monitoring gay sites for the chance to pounce on arguments that might actually bring you out of the closet and into a better world? You are SOOOOOOOO worth fantasizing about. This 'gay couples' couples issue tears you up." You call this intelligent inquiry? Still NO QUESTIONS, more of the same.

@ David "@Pepa... NO I did not say that gays are nonhuman, though I suggested you had ISSUES.... Do us all a favor... Find one (do you have ONE?) of your 'brighter' Tea Party friends who will read your posts. Then try to find a family member (again, in the 'sane' realm?) to read them, too. Gay issues are apparently too complicated for you to comprehend by yourself. If both reviewers (that you know) also suggest drug therapy, counseling, even commitment to a place where you can find peace, do yourself a favor and just DO IT...." Again NO SERIOUS QUESTIONS HERE just more of the same banter and dithering.
