Dan Savage Aims to Save LGBT Kids

IT GETS BETTER DAN SAVAGE X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

Writer Dan Savage is reaching out to LGBT teenagers to let them know life may be difficult now, but "it gets better."

The "It Gets Better" Project is inspired by the suicide of 15-year-old Indiana teenager Billy Lucas, who hanged himself last week in his family's barn after enduring bullying from his classmates. After writing a post on The Slog about Lucas's death last week, one commenter expressed a desire to have spoken to him to tell him that things get better.

Savage, in his September 21 Savage Love podcast, said he felt the same way and decided to address the problem. The project is a YouTube channel where LGBT adults can upload videos targeted at gay teens to let then know their future can still be bright.

The first video, posted Tuesday morning, features Savage and his husband talking about growing up as gay teenagers.

So this says the bible. Funny because the word homosexual is a rather new word, invented in the 19th century. I guess you read a new version of the bible which was appearantly adapted from an old one. And who says that are the words of God? Did you hear Him say those words yourself? It is very scary that in the year 2011 people still believe that the bible was written by God. I don't buy that at all. Think for yourself before you judge a human being or a group of human beings by using the bible. I think that is a sin!

Yes! Yes! Yes tell the lesbian and homosexuals that God loves them 100% beyond measure and they are very valuable...BUT ALSO tell them to REPENT and CHANGE because God clearly condemns homosexuality and his Word says, "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders...will inherit the kingdom of God." 1 Cor. 6:9,10 [ read also Rom.1:24-32]

This is great and all, and I applaud Dan Savage's efforts, but left on it's own, things don't necessarily "Get Better" for LGBT youth facing bullying. The point is to fight to Make it Better and Stop Homophobia. http://sherrytalksback.wordpress.com/2010/10/19/does-it-really-get-better-for-lgbt-people/

Thanks so much for this video. High school was decades ago for me, but so much of what you said brought back poignant memories.

families can also have a horrible bullying effect on a young person. i experienced this as a child from a brother(s), as well as my lover did and continues to. a victim of a stroke, at the mercy of his father, literally a prisoner of war, because he is gay. he had used drugs and alcohol to self-medicate, no stranger to the gay community, the booze and pills. the cultural bullying of what it means to be a 'man' or a 'woman' in america, has totally continued to fan the flames of the sickness in america. my best friend, partner and collaborator, sits in a hospice deprived of any of the real WANTING TO CARE FOR HIM people in is life visiting him. because the father is allowed to control how nick lives and dies. anyone that is in a non-traditional relationship, i would tell you to consider a durable power of attorney immediately. you have no idea the hell that bigoted 'religious' people will gladly do to their own child OR YOU.

Although I recognize the good intentions of all those posting videos to the It Gets Better Project, I concur with other posters that this isn't the best way to deal with these suicides. There is a new group, organized mainly through FB, called the Make It Better Project. A response to the IGBP, Make It Better Project aims to remind youth suffering from bullying for being LGBTQ that there are ways to change the situation now. Saying you can get through the bad times to see good ones implies, unintentionally I'm sure, that it is the bullied youth's responsibility to ignore this bullying, because bullying is just a fact of life as a gay teen. Instead, the message should be that you don't have to suffer this bullying, because it is wrong, and should and will be stopped.

I'm floored by the comments implying that a video won't save lives. Foremost, this appears to be an amazing grass roots education campaign. Men and women from all walks of life have already participated which clearly conveys a message of hope and a message that conveys homosexuals are everywhere and contribute to society at every level. Some videos also provide invaluable information for available resources for struggling youth. If these hundreds of videos save just one life they are all well worth it. Please keep up the great work.

Wise words. Suicide is complex and as a survivor of several friends' suicides, I can tell you a video wouldn't have saved them. I think Savage had good intentions, but this is too facile. Well intentioned, but glib.

This project is amazing. We all should take part in supporting this process in our youth. How can others support this in their local communities and how can we help you in your efforts. Keep strong and keep moving. There is much needed work to be done in education and awareness. Lets help build more respect, tolerance and understanding diversity in our schools.
