Tasmania Recognizes Overseas Gay Marriage

The upper house of Tasmania’s legislature has passed an amendment to the Relationships Act allowing gay couples from other states and overseas to be automatically recognized as partners in a Tasmanian Deed of Relationship.

This amendment makes Tasmania the first Australian state to recognize overseas same-sex marriages. According to Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman Rodney Croome (pictured), the move will provide greater legal security to couples moving to Tasmania.

The amendment passed the upper house without opposition. Last month it passed the lower house and was supported by all but three of the 25 members.

Steve, in Baltimore, said it ALL. This country has become the laughing stock of the world. Our social policies are archaic, compared to other nations. Our military is still 'segregated' in terms of sexual orientation; only a handful of states have legalized s-s marriage; our 'fierce advocate' has turned out to be anything but; and so on. Kudos and congrats to Tasmania! Hopefully the rest of Oz, and New Zealand, will soon follow suit. Good on, guys!

I'm glad a conservative state like Tasmania could recognize gay marriage, I'm just surprised it wasn't NSW or Vic that did it first. Maybe The Federal Parliament will catch on and allow gay marriage soon... probably not... Minority governments suck!
