Gay Doritos Ads Won't Air

DORITOS COMMERCIAL 2 X390 (YOUTUBE) | ADVOCATE.COM

The pair of gay-themed Doritos ads that made the rounds on the Web Monday won’t air during the Super Bowl, according to a spokesman for Frito-Lay.

Frito-Lay director of public relations Chris Kuechenmeister told the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation the ads were two out of 5,600 that were submitted to the company for its “Crash the Super Bowl” contest.

He said the ads were not among the finalists chosen by a panel of judges and have no chance of airing during the Super Bowl or otherwise.

The ads, which ran on The Advocate yesterday, sparked mixed reaction from gay viewers. One ad features two men steaming in the sauna as one man seductively eyes the other’s crotch. In a second ad a man gazes across the fence at his two gay neighbors, who are sunning themselves and eating Doritos by the pool.

Kuechenmeister said the contest’s judges sought to “identify spots that were appropriate for everyone” and “observe a level of respect for everybody.”

He said though the ads don’t appear on the contest’s official page and the company has no direct ability to remove them, he would be raising the issue with the company’s legal team.

The problem with portraying gays in situations other than sexual is to completely delute the entire reason for doing these ads in the first place. Let's face it, portraying gays in situations other than sexual is to put them in everyone's else's category..boring.

s How many people on here are complaining that its indecent while half naked young women are thrown around all throughout the game. The rest of the commercials feature women running around in next to nothing making lewd comments and you take the hypocritical position that this over the line? The only thing that separates this from any of the other commercials during the Super Bowl are your prejudices.

@David and those like him....READ THE ARTICLE AND KNOW THE FACTS!!! Frito Lay did not create these commercials, they are submitted by the public for the Crash the SuperBowl contest every year. They are not on the Doritos website as they are not property of Frito Lay!!!! So boycott Frito Lay if you like...odds are they will survive!!!

@David: I'm munching on a bag of Doritos right now. And love them. Guess no one really cares if you buy Frito-lay products anymore. I'm glad they weren't chosen, as they were inappropriate for the Super Bowl audience, including many children.

Oh, grow up. Yes, they employ stereotypes (for which, as they saying goes, there unfortunately is always a good reason). But it's a sad commentary if we haven't matured enough to laugh at ourselves, or silliness like this. The fact that Frito Lay even put together two commercials they thought would appeal to gay consumers says a hell of a lot about how far we've come in the last 25 years. This CONSTANT bitching about being PC is so incredibly tiresome. Straight comedians who love queers skewer us -- and every other minority group -- all the time. From my perspective this was no different. If you want to complain about offensive stereotypes being paraded in front of millions, turn on one of these idiotic reality design competitions or such nonsense, and see these mincing, estrogen-overloaded, bitch-fighting sissies with lisps that would cut leaded glass. THAT is offensive. And no, I don't care if they are simply being themselves. It stinks.

Had the first one been about two lesbians and the wife next door, you know it would have been one of the finalists. Sad but unfortunately true. As it is, it's just more of the same ol same ol flaming homos.

I agree with most of the comments here which stated that both of these ads (as humerous as they may be) are somewhat offensive and displays the sterotype in which we are fighting against every day. I will say, that if this ad were going to be seen at some kind of glbt function, it might have been accepted. The fact that we're gay and most of us have lived through this sterotypical behavior would be able to keep it within its context. Opposing opinions would make it out to be a finger pointing moment, perhaps stating "Yep, there's your typical fag" or some other negative statement. What would be our defense then? Frito Lay needs to re-think their ads, if they want to help us out, paint us in our truest form!

The first one is lame and perpetuates a stereotype that gays have no identity's that aren't sexual. It's offensive. The second one goes in that direction to, but it's not as bad. I think they're both a little much. There are other ways to portray gays where it's not offensively and overtly sexual.
