The Indiana house of representatives approved a constitutional ban on marriage equality Tuesday evening with a 70-26 vote.
If the ban passes in the senate, which the Courier Press reports is likely, the same bill must be approved again by the 2013 or 2014 house and senate. From there, voters will decide on whether to constitutionally bar same-sex couples from marriage in Indiana in the November 2014 election.
While Democratic representative Mary Ann Sullivan said the amendment would "taint our constitution with the language of hate," Republican representative Ralph Foley said the ban would not stop same-sex couples from living together.
Control of the house went back to Republicans after the 2010 election.
