Following the Department of Justice's decision to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act, U.S. senator Dianne Feinstein of California announced Wednesday that she will introduce legislation to repeal the 15-year-old law.

"As a member of the Judiciary Committee, it is my intention to introduce legislation that will once and for all repeal the Defense of Marriage Act," she said in a statement. "My own belief is that when two people love each other and enter the contract of marriage, the federal government should honor that."

Feinstein opposed the law when it was being decided upon in Congress in 1996.

Earlier Wednesday several Congress members, including New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand, renewed their commitment to repealing DOMA.
