Harvey Milk Stamp Promoted

HARVEY MILK STAMP X390 (DAVIDMIXNER.COM) | ADVOCATE.COM

Several LGBT activists are campaigning for the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp honoring Harvey Milk, and one of them says Milk would love it — and find it hilarious.

“He would get that twisted smile of his and say, ‘Hell, imagine all those straights having to lick my backside to send a piece of mail,’” writes David Mixner on his blog, DavidMixner.com.

Mixner says this is nonetheless a serious effort to honor the assassinated San Francisco city supervisor. Leaders of the campaign are Michael Gaffney and Nicole Murray-Ramirez, assisted by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Others involved include Mixner; Milk’s nephew Stuart Milk; Dustin Lance Black, Oscar-winning screenwriter of Milk; California assembly speaker John Pérez; Milk associate Cleve Jones; and the Reverend Troy Perry.

More information, Mixner says, is available by writing to HarveyMilkStampDir@cox.net. For Mixner’s full blog post, click here.

"Lick my backside", is a PC version of what Harvey would have said but the sentiment is there, thank you! Were Scott Smith still alive he would have probably lobbied for an edition using the old fashion glue, naturally trying to keep that quote under wraps. My beef is with the picture. It looks like it was the winning submission of a contest,it doesn't capture any of Harvey's drive, spirit or determination; lt only looks vaguely like Harvey. Better they should have taken a picture of the bust at City Hall and sent the money paid to the artist to the Trevor project. Absolutely it should have been a forever stamp but g'luck on that one.

As much as I agree, that a Harvey Milk stamp be made, I disagree with the choice. It's for selfish reasons, but honorable reasons. A few years ago, a stamp was issued to commemorate the raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima in WWll. It was based on the famous photograph by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. I knew Harvey Milk, and my image of Harvey on 6/7/77 introduced Harvey as an Openly gay spokesperson nationally 5 before he was elected. It was featured in Randy Shilts Book THE MAYOR of CASTRO STREET, and for the next 30 years was probably the best known image of Harvey (before Sean Penn played him in the MILK movie.) IT has become iconic and deserves consideration for the Harvey Milk stamp. It shows Harvey holding a candle in one hand and a bullhorn in the other, and a sign in the background SAVE OUR RIGHTS. For the history of that image, and my footnote in gay history, visit www.thecastro.net/street/memoriespage/pritikin/scene05.html That is what I base my reasons o.

The part about licking was like figurative speech considering the era Milk lived in. Lighten up, people. I liked this article and hope the stamp is made.

It would be nice if the image were a bit more updated. The cost of a first-class stamp is 44 cents, not 32. (The cost of mailing a post card is currently 28 cents.)

In the event that postal authorities nix a regular postage stamp, why can't we have a seal on the order of xmas seals and easter seals (only larger) which could be used in addition to regular postage every day of the year. Proceeds would be used for some LGBT charitable purpose. There could be a series commemorating great gay personages of the past, both American and foreign, with appropriate titles on each. Give folks a history lesson. I would enthusiastically use these on every piece of my outgoing mail.

Would love to see a Milk stamp, but haven't seen a "lickable" stamp in years. The post office uses self-stick labels nowadays.
