Controversial Trans City Manager Fired

Susan Stanton, the city manager of Lake Worth, Fla., was fired from her position Tuesday night in a 3-2 vote.

The Palm Beach Postreports that the motion to terminate Stanton's employment was made by vice mayor Scott Maxwell, who has reportedly disagreed with Stanton on a number of issues during her two-and-a-half-year term.

Commissioner Suzanne Mulvehill, one of two voters who opposed the firing, called the decision "a reckless and irresponsible decision for the best interests of the city."

Mulvehill also praised Stanton's effectiveness in the position. "It was absolutely mayhem in this city when I came on board in 2008," she said. "We have made tremendous progress."

Stanton, who first made headlines in 2007 when she was fired from her position as Largo, Fla., city manager after going public about her transgender status, received negative press in April when it was alleged that she had harassed and attempted to shut down downtown Lake Worth's only gay-friendly establishment.

Also included in Tuesday's vote was the appointment of finance director Steve Carr as acting city manager.
