Americablog: Don’t Donate to DNC

Bloggers John Aravosis and Joe Sudbay launched a campaign urging anyone concerned about LGBT equality not to donate money to the Obama campaign or the Democratic Party.

The website Americablog launched a campaign Monday challenging anyone concerned about LGBT equality to take a pledge against donating money to the Democratic National Committee, its spin-off arm, Organizing For America, or the Obama campaign.

“Take The Pledge: Don’t Ask, Don’t Give” is the product of anger over what the site’s creators, John Aravosis and Joe Sudbay, see as a lack of action on LGBT issues by the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party. Specifically, the site is asking activists to suspend donations until three goals are met: passage of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, and repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

“A year ago, the LGBT community, our families, friends and allies across the country were elated by the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. We poured our hearts and wallets out to elect a Democratic president and Congress,” reads the pledge page. “Over the past year our joy has turned to frustration as President Obama and the Democratic Party have moved away from their campaign commitments to gay and lesbian Americans.”

The blog post announcing the new campaign lists a history of about 25 ways in which Aravosis believes the Obama campaign and Administration has failed LGBT Americans.

The campaign comes on the heels of a public feud that played out last week between Aravosis and the openly gay treasurer of the DNC, Andy Tobias. In a blog entry that spurred nearly 300 comments, Aravosis detailed a mailing from the DNC that urged Mainers to vote last Tuesday but failed to mention or take sides on the state's marriage referendum. He also cited emails sent out by OFA urging Mainers to phone bank for New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine’s reelection campaign.

I have removed myself from Obama's email group or whatever it is that got his message out to millions of supporters. I never gave money, but I can shut off information, at least in my small part.

The only thing supporting the DNC will do is insure that 'illegal immigrants' are given the path to citizenship and full civil rights (unless they're gay) before I, a legal citizen am given them. The Democratic Party may throw us a bone before the 2010 election but it'll just be a bone and the rest will be it's just not time but we do support repealing DOMA. President Obama is not the 'fierce advocate' that candidate Obama promised to be. He gives a great speech but Actions speak louder than words and his Administration is totally lacking on our civil rights. I will bet he starts talking about bringing illegals out of the shadows again and works for a bill to do that and leaves us in the shadows to be the ATM to pay for their Social Security and the over 1000 rights they will be given that we will not have. Candidate Obama fooled me once, shame on him, President Obama is soliciting funds and I won't shame myself by giving to him or the DNC.

I just want to say that Obama has NOT been in office a year yet. While he has been slow to extend gay rights he has done a lot more for the country than our previous president (with a war and economic recession on his plate no less). Let's continue to support him and voice what needs should be met in our community to him and our local politicians. It is warring within our community and within the democratic party that leads to successful republic bids for office. Let's use our voices until we can no longer be ignored and build up a base of support.

Chung Fang, sweetie, take a breath and calm the fuck down! No one said to not donate money to a Democrat politician who's running for office and who actually supports the Gay Community. They said to not donate to the DNC. If you can't see - or take the time to see - or have no brains to see the difference there, then you should just put a cork in it and let the big boys and girls play. If we continue to support namby-pamby Democrats who do NOTHING for us, how does that help us? Yes, I realize that Republicans are evil, and if the ONLY choice was between a Republican and a Democrat, I'd vote for the dem - but we're talking supporting people WELL before the only choice we have is between an evil Repub and a Republican in Democrat's clothing (like Feinstein). Get some perspective and proportion, Penelope, and for Krist's sake - take a valium like a normal person.

Obama is the empty-suit I feared all along. His speeches are beautiful and look how we all ate it up. He's too busy running for 2012 and doesn't want to lose the independent vote. So the blah, blah, blah goes on. We as a minority must 'ACT-UP' now. One way is to withhold money. Yes, the republicans hate us, but the democrats are scared of us. They are pandering to a group of wingnuts that will never vote for them anyway. We as a group must make clear we won't take it anymore. Our civil liberties must be taken to the courts. We can't have bigots voting on our rights. The only way to voice our outrage is to stop donating to the democrats!

Look, if you want to donate money, you should. This organization doesn't say you should shut off your donations completely. Just stop donating to Obama, Organizing for America and the DNC. I'd also say that the HRC is also completely unworthy of your money right now. Power in Washington comes from money. Groups and individuals that can dole out money are correspondingly more powerful. So we should make sure that the groups and individuals that get our money will be actively working for LGBT rights right now. By all means, donate to individual congressmen and senators who unambiguously support LGBT rights (e.g. Tammy Baldwin, Jared Polis or Jerrold Nadler). By all means, support PACs and organizations that are pushing for change now. That strategy is better than just blindly giving to the DNC. Candidates who receive funds that way know exactly why they are being supported and will be more likely to stand up for us.

There's a difference between support and action. There's little difference between empty promises and lies. The Repulican's have never lied about their disdain for our kind. Democrats have played us for years. John and Joe are simply pointing out that fact vis a vis the Obama administration. Einstein's (or someone's) definition of insanity is to do the exact same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. Or as that icon of intellectualism George W. Bush put it, "Fool me once, shame on...shame on you. Fool me...you can't get fooled again." Well, momma didn't raise no crazy fool. The DNC and OFA won't see my cash again until promises are finally kept.
