The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center announced Friday that it will honor Emmy award–winning actress Megan Mullally of NBC’s hit television show Will & Grace with its Creative Integrity Award at the center’s Women’s Night 2001 fund-raiser on March 3 in Beverly Hills, Calif. Mullally, who came out as bisexual in a 1999 interview in The Advocate, is being honored, according to a center spokesperson, “for her strong support of the LGBT community, on-camera and off-, and for her personal achievement in the creative arts, which has heightened the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people [and] significantly contributed to advancing the cause of freedom and free speech.” The spokesperson added that Mullally serves “as a role model to empower women everywhere.” In addition to her standout role as Karen Walker on Will & Grace, Mullally is an acclaimed singer and stage actress (including a lead in the ’90s Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying with Matthew Broderick); in fact, she performed her “Supreme Music Program” to sold-out crowds last summer at the center’s Village at Ed Gould Plaza. Other Women’s Night honorees this year include openly lesbian California assembly member Jackie Goldberg; John Hancock Financial Services Inc., for its “immigration commercial” featuring a lesbian couple and their baby; and other community leaders. The event will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel; for tickets and information, call (310) 996-1188.
