Sex and the City’s Samantha is not, in fact, a gay man

Candace Bushnell, author of the book on which HBO’s popular series Sex and the City is based, is reported in the New York Daily News as having expressed dismay in an interview with another paper that the cable series, which is written by “two gay guys” (Darren Star and Michael Patrick King), is no longer true to the spirit of the original. Bushnell was quoted as saying, “The characters are very different. Samantha is more like a gay man than a woman. Look at her obsession with male body parts; women just aren’t like that.” Kim Cattrall, the actress who plays Samantha, feels the issues on the show are neither gay nor straight: “They’re about relationships and about people. People are finally coming to terms with the fact that women do talk about sex. They do talk that way. They do act that way—[just] not all women and not all men.” At the New York premiere of the series’s new season, however, Bushnell says her quotes were lifted from an article that was “full of inaccuracies,” adding that the “writers have all done a good job” and that “the show is fantastic!” In summation, she added, “As we say in New York, ‘Everybody’s gay.’”
