The Theater League Alliance of Southern California presented the Ovation Awards Monday night, honoring Los Angeles-area stage work during the 2000-2001 season, and Variety notes that cohost and Advocate columnist Bruce Vilanch wasn't the only out artist onstage. Playwright Jane Anderson (If These Walls Could Talk 2) took home the Best World Premiere Play or Musical award for her transgender-themed drama Looking for Normal, and actor Leslie Jordan (Sordid Lives) was named Best Featured Actor in a Play for Del Shore's Southern Baptist Sissies.
