Mothers and Sons, the Tony Award-nominated Broadway drama by Tony-winning gay playwright Terrence McNally, will play its final performance June 22.
Mothers and Sons stars Tony and Emmy winner Tyne Daly as a mother paying an unexpected visit to her late son's former lover (Frederick Weller), who is now raising a child (Grayson Taylor) with his younger husband (Bobby Steggert). See production photos here and watch a commercial for the play here.
Directed by Next Fall's Sheryl Kaller, the play opened March 24 for an open-ended run at the Golden Theatre, where portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt are on display.
Tony-nominated for Best Play alongside Harvey Fierstein's Casa Valentina, Mothers and Sons lost the coveted award at Sunday evening's ceremony to All the Way, a historical drama starring Bryan Cranston as Lyndon B. Johnson. Daly, who earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Play, was bested by Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill's Audra McDonald. See a full list of winners and nominees here.
At the time of its closing, Mothers and Sons will have played 33 previews and 104 regular performances. A national tour is reportedly in discussions.
The production recently partnered with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on the Grammy-winning hip-hop duo's 30/30 Project, a nonprofit dedicated to providing worldwide access to affordable health care. Ryan Lewis created the 30/30 Project with his mother, HIV/AIDS awareness advocate Julie Lewis, who contracted HIV from a 1984 blood transfusion while giving birth to his older sister.
Mothers and Sons marks McNally's 20th Broadway production. Others include The Ritz, The Rink, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Master Class, and Love! Valour! Compassion!
Looking ahead to his 21st Broadway production, Emmy-winning Will & Grace star Megan Mullally will join Tony winners Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick in an updated version of McNally's showbusiness comedy It's Only a Play, which will open October 7 for a limited 17-week engagement at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
