Where Do N.Y. Congressional Reps Stand on DOMA Repeal? 

Following the New York marriage victory last month, two members of the state’s congressional delegation — Reps. Kathy Hochul and Bill Owens — have signed on as cosponsors of the House DOMA repeal bill, titled the Respect for Marriage Act.

“Now, the not-so-good news,” Americablog Gay's Joe Sudbay wrote Tuesday. “One Democrat and all the NY House GOPers are still not co-sponsoring the repeal bill. The one Democrat is Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D). She votes the right way on LGBT equality legislation, so not sure why she isn't on board.

“For whatever reason, her office never gave me an answer and never called me back. (I've only known Carolyn for 17 years, having working with her in the gun violence prevention issue since before she was even a candidate)[,]” Sudbay continued.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold hearings on DOMA repeal efforts on July 20. New York senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer are both cosponsors of legislation to repeal the 1996 law.
