WATCH: Exclusive Empire Promo Highlights LGBT Storyline

The Advocate has obtained an exclusive clip of Fox's Empire that highlights the journey of its gay character.

The promo, which will begin airing Sunday on cable TV and Fox affiliates, showcases Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett), the musically talented son of an antigay music mogul, as he struggles to win the approval of his father.

The promo also shows how his mother, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), becomes an ally to her son in this mission.

Empire has been lauded for its portrayal of homophobia in the world of music and hip-hop, and has proved to be a hit show for Fox. Last week's episode boasted a 4.3 rating and a series-high 11.36 million total viewers.
