Detroit
Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow is back with her first feature since 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, tackling hefty, prescient subject matter with Detroit. The film centers on five days of rioting in the summer of 1967 spurred by a police raid of an unlicensed social club where people of color were celebrating the return of soldiers from Vietnam. Patrons of the club were hauled off to jail and riots ensued, causing looting and the burning of buildings. Bigelow takes the story from macro to micro, choosing to focus on the true horrific incident that occurred at the Algiers Motel during the riots when state troopers stormed the building, killing three men of color and torturing others. Anthony Mackie and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega star in the explosive, all too relevant film.
