Best Same-Sex Couples Costumes for 2018
Brew Up Last-Minute Costume Ideas for Queer Couples!
Are you and your partner having a hard time finding cute couples costume ideas? It can be a serious struggle for same-sex couples to find inspiration from film and television due to lack of representation. But look no further than this list! From classic films of the 1960s to the hottest TV shows of 2018; every couple can find something that speaks to their style and taste. Just make sure you don't accidentally agree to two costume parties at the same time!
Carol and Therese from 'Carol' (2015)
The main characters from this tantalizing sapphic film would make the perfect couples costume! Set in the 1950s and staying true to that gorgeous aesthetic through hair and wardrobe, this is perfect for any couple who wants to stand out with style.
How to get the look:
For Carol: A blond bob wig, a classic pea coat, a pencil skirt, a vintage-looking blouse, stilettos, and lots of costume jewelry!
For Therese: A brunet bob wig, a tight-fitting sweater, an A-line skirt, kitten heels, and the iconic headband!
Simon and Bram from 'Love, Simon' (2018)
The groundbreaking film Love, Simon was a smash hit this year. If you and your partner want a topical and adorable costume idea, Simon and Bram fit the bill. Bonus points if you go as Simon as John Lennon and Bram as post-presidency Barack Obama as they did in the film's Halloween party.
How to get the look:
For Simon as John Lennon: a shoulder length brunet wig, an all-white suit, a white button-down shirt, white Converse sneakers, and of course the iconic round glasses.
For Bram as post-presidency Barack Obama: a yellow button-down shirt, a lei, and jeans.
Blanche Hudson and Baby Jane Hudson from 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' (1962)
Even though they are sisters in the film, this pair will be a hit at parties due to the two roles played by absolute LGBTQ icons. Baby Jane is portrayed by Bette Davis, and Joan Crawford gives life to her sister Blanche. The two Hollywood stars, though they were painted by the media to be rivals, were heavily rumored to have had a romantic affair. If you want a ~scandalous tongue-in-cheek costume that will make any classic movie buff's heart stop, this one's for you!
How to get the look:
For Baby Jane: a curly blond bob-length wig, bright red lipstick, a white vintage-looking dress, and Mary Janes with heels.
For Blanche: a black wig with a bun, a scarf, a plain floor-length black dress, sandals, a fake cigarette, and lots of your favorite brow product to get those dramatic Joan Crawford brows!
Bert and Ernie from 'Sesame Street' (1969)
Despite the controversy, the LGBTQ community is still claiming this Muppet duo as our own, thank you very much! For many years, there was speculation about the true nature of the relationship between the two beloved characters, but last month their true colors were revealed -- hint, it's rainbow. Sure, there was some pushback, but we all know what's going on. This couples costume is sure to warm the hearts of everyone at the party.
How to get the look:
For Bert: a colorful vertical-striped sweater, green trousers, saddle shoes-- and, if you want to go all out, yellow body paint.
For Ernie: a red and blue horizontal-striped sweater, cuffed blue jeans, red Converse sneakers, and, for the full effect, orange body paint.
Cheryl Blossom and Toni Topaz from 'Riverdale' (2018)
Riverdale offers an interesting perspective on an LGBTQ character. Rather than being bullied, Cheryl Blossom is the bully. It isn't good representation, depending on who you ask, but it is a portrayal of a bisexual character we don't often get to see. Toni Topaz is the exact opposite, a sweet girl -- even though she's in the gang the South Side Serpents-- with a strong sense of justice. The canon couple warms our hearts with every interaction, and with the endless outfits both of the characters wear, you shouldn't have any problems finding something out of your own closet. Just don't forget the Serpents jacket!
How to get the look:
For Cheryl: a long red wig, any form of a red shirt with a skirt combo, thigh-high boots, bright red lipstick, and a red leather jacket.
For Toni: a brunet wig with pink highlights, a flannel to tie around your waist, ripped black skinny jeans, combat boots, and a black leather jacket.
Elphaba and Glinda from 'Wicked' (2003)
OK. so they aren't technically "canon," and Elphaba ends up with a man at the end (we love a bisexual icon or bicon, if you will), but come on! We all felt that sweet sapphic tension during "What Is This Feeling?" and there is no denying that the constant abuse and bullying Elphie faces because she is different is something that resonates with the LGBTQ community. This costume is sure to make you and your partner the most "Popular" pair at the party!
How to get the look:
For Elphaba: a long black wig, a stereotypical witch hat, a floor-length black gown with a cape, a broom, black lipstick, and green body paint -- if you dare.
For Glinda: a curly, shoulder length, blond wig, a blue Cinderella-style ball gown, a scepter, and a tiara.
Elio and Oliver from 'Call Me by Your Name' (2017)
This 2017 film became a modern-day classic overnight. The story of Elio, Oliver, and the events of a steamy summer in the Italian countryside won massive praise from critics and moviegoers alike. Dressing up as this pair will certainly make everyone at the party get the urge to watch the film or read the book ASAP.
How to get the look:
For Elio: a curly black wig, a pink-and-blue striped muscle shirt, tan cargo shorts (with a blue pattern), and of course the iconic Star of David necklace.
For Oliver: a blond wavy wig, a blue T-shirt, yellow shorts, sunglasses to hang off the shirt, and a tan backpack.
Ellen and Laurie from 'Ellen' (1994)
Though the addition of Laurie as Ellen's official girlfriend was what got the show ultimately canceled, no one will #Cancel you and your partner for showing up as this memorable lesbian couple. For maximum cuteness, show up in their wedding outfits!
How to get the look:
For Ellen: most important -- a wig like her signature blond pixie cut, a gray suit, and a light blue blouse to go underneath. And bring your sense of humor!
For Laurie: a brunet bob wig, a long-sleeved lace gown with a slim silhouette, and a bouquet of flowers.
Jack and Ennis from 'Brokeback Mountain' (2005)
"I wish I knew how to quit you" has become a part of the lexicon of LGBTQ people everywhere since the movie came out-- no pun intended. This Ang Lee film was notable for being one of the first of the new millenniun to put a same-sex couple in the spotlight. Everyone will recognize these gay cowboys, so the dreaded "What are you supposed to be again?" will be kept to a minimum.
How to get the look:
For Jack: a brunet wig, a black cowboy hat, a denim shirt, blue jeans, brown cowboy boots, and amazing sideburns.
For Enis: a short blond wig, a tan cowboy hat, a brown Carhart-style jacket, khaki pants, and brown boots.
SpongeBob and Patrick from 'Spongebob' (1999)
Get ready to have the "Best Day Ever" when you and your partner hit the town as two of the most beloved characters in recent memory. While SpongeBob's official sexuality is ace (yay for representation!) rumors about these two have gotten the show in hot water more than once during its 20 years on air. Regardless, this goofy duo is loved by pretty much everyone. Just get ready for every millennial in a 10-mile radius to come up and share quotes with you. Come on, who can resist a good occasion to ask, "Is mayonnaise an instrument?"
How to get the look:
For SpongeBob: a white button-down, a red tie, khaki shorts, knee-high socks, black shoes, and a winning smile.
For Patrick: a pink shirt, green and purple board shorts, and purple eyeshadow for extra fabulousness.
Daria and Jane from 'Daria' (1997)
Daria and Jane, although classic '90s characters, would fit in just fine in 2018. In fact, they might fit in better than they did in 1997. These fierce feminist friends gave us serious gal pal vibes and were style icons. Daria's blase attitude and failure to conform to social standards speak to queer souls in a way that is undeniable. You won't be standing on anyone's neck with this costume choice.
How to get the look:
For Daria: a brunet wig with bangs, a forest green zip-up jacket, an orange shirt, a black pleated mini-skirt, black Doc Martens-style boots, and John Lennon-style circle glasses.
For Jane: a short black bob wig, a red jacket, a black V-neck T-shirt, gray shorts, black tights (or leggings), gray Doc Martens style combat boots, and dark maroon lipstick!
Buzz and Woody from 'Toy Story' (1995)
"To infinity and beyond!" This duo is recognizable worldwide, and their friendship is so sweet. Through three heartwarming films, and with Toy Story 4 in the works, Woody and Buzz show that opposites really attract and that friendship can take many forms. Since Buzz's lewk is pretty extra, it'll be a labor of love, but it will totally have everybody at the party saying "You've got a friend in me!"
How to get the look:
For Woody: a short brunet wig, a brown cowboy hat, a red bandanna worn ascot style, a yellow plaid shirt, a cow print vest, a belt with an empty holster, blue jeans, brown cowboy boots, and you can't forget the sheriff's badge!
For Buzz: Honestly, this one is hard to pull off, but it can be done. There are plenty of store-bought costumes, but they are expensive, so if your Halloween is held hostage by a budget, don't worry, you can still get the look. You'll need a purple full-length bodysuit that's cut out around the face, and then you'll need a white bodysuit over that; then you can draw out all the logos and buttons that Buzz's spacesuit has. For extra pizzazz get some Anastasia Beverly Hills dip-brow because Buzz's brows are everything!
