Controversial A Beautiful Mind wins four Oscars

Despite qualms from many quarters about its historical distortions and deletions, A Beautiful Mind was the big winner at Sunday's 74th annual Academy Awards, taking home Best Picture, Best Director (Ron Howard), Best Adapted Screenplay (Akiva Goldsman, "inspired by" the book by Sylvia Nasar), and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Connelly). Oscar's longest show (E! Online clocked it at four hours, 17 minutes; the Los Angeles Times said four hours, 23 minutes) was also a historical one--Halle Berry's win for her role in Monster's Ball made her the first African-American Best Actress winner; Denzel Washington for Training Day was the second African-American Best Actor winner and the first since Sidney Poitier in 1963; Shrek took home the inaugural Best Animated Feature award; and Randy Newman finally won an Oscar (Best Original Song, for Monsters, Inc.'s "If I Didn't Have You") after 16 losses. Iris's Jim Broadbent was an upset winner in the Best Supporting Actor category, as conventional wisdom predicted that out actor Sir Ian McKellen would take the prize for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Openly gay costume designer Angus Strathie was honored for Best Costume Design for Moulin Rouge, alongside Catherine Martin. Gosford Park, director Robert Altman's all-star murder mystery studded with several gay characters, was honored for Julian Fellowes's original screenplay.
