The Los Angeles run of the hit Tony award-winning play Hairspray opened on Tuesday at the Pantages Theater to a star-studded premiere. The play stars Advocate columnist Bruce Vilanch and Marissa Jaret Winokur. The ensemble cast were joined at the after-party at the Henry Fonda Music Box Theater by a variety of Hollywood heavyweights. Gay couple and musical writers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman were in attendance along with David Hyde Pierce, Ricki Lake, and Paul Reubens. The play has received shining reviews. According to Variety, "Bruce Vilanch takes Edna Turnblad in a direction that's campier and funnier than Harvey Fierstein's sentimental Tony-winning turn." The play runs through September 5; tickets range in price from $27 to $87.
