Fox 2000 is trying to re-create its 1956 film version of Carousel, this time with Hugh Jackman to star as carnival barker Billy Bigelow, who is killed in a botched robbery due to his temper, gets stuck in purgatory, and is then given one day to return and fix the problems he left behind. Variety announced that a deal is already in the works with the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization to secure the rights to the pair's original music and lyrics from the 1945 stage musical of the same name.
Jackman sang the role of Billy in a 2002 Carnegie Hall concert to honor Rodgers and Hammerstein. However, as the star has a deal to develop musicals with Disney, the details are not finalized for him to sing for Fox, which owns the rights to the film version. Jackman is known for his musical work in Broadway's The Boy From Oz and for his role as Wolverine in the popular X-Men series. (The Advocate)
