Out director Gus Van Sant was arrested Thursday morning in Portland, Ore., on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Smoking Gun Web site. The site reported that Portland police crossed paths with Van Sant when he was at an intersection and his Porsche's headlights were turned off. Sgt. Brian Schmautz told Smoking Gun that after police pulled him over, Van Sant appeared to exhibit "glassy eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol." He was given a sobriety test, which he failed, and was taken to the county jail.
The director is well known for the films Good Will Hunting, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, Elephant, and My Own Private Idaho.
Van Sant is scheduled for a January 17 court appearance, charged with a misdemeanor DUI. (The Advocate)
