Mary-Louise Parker has revealed that she begged filmmaker Jon Avnet not to censor the lesbian plot in the 1991 movie adaptation of Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes.
"I tried to make [the romantic connection] more articulated at the time, but they didn't really want to go that way," Parker told AfterEllen.com during the July Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills. "I really tried to push it at the time, and they didn't want to go there with me. Mary Stuart did, Fannie Flagg did, but not the director, not the producer, nobody else."
Parker, now star of the Showtime series Weeds, played best friend to Mary Stuart Masterson's character in the film. In Flagg's novel the two women were lovers. (The Advocate)
