10. THEATER: Busted: The Musical
Bianca Leigh is guilty of spotlight theft in her new show -- first workshopped in 2010 as A Night at the Tombs -- which returns and runs March 8-29 at New York's Laurie Beechman Theatre. Presented by Theatre Askew, the trans performer's engaging solo act, which features songs by Avenue Q's Jeff Whitty and others, muses on gender identity as it details her brief 1987 incarceration for solicitation. For tickets visit SpinCycleNYC.com.
9. Amy Ray, Lung of Love
The dynamic new solo album from the very
prolific Indigo Girl finds Ray continuing to evolve and here she
collaborates with other musicians for the first time in her 25-year
career. Ray also enlists numerous vocalists on Lung of Love, including Brandi Carlile on the come-to-Jesus-throwdown "The Rock Is My
Foundation."
8. WEB: Jack in a Box
Out star of MilkMilkLemonade (recognizable to many for his recent hilarious guest spot on 30 Rock, funnyman Michael Cyril Creighton won the Best Web Series Pilot award at the 2010 New York Television Festival for this indispensably uncomfortable tragicomedy, which is bitterly inspired by the cupcake addict's job at an off-Broadway theater box office. Following the online sitcom's February 28 third-season premiere, Creighton'll post a new episode every two weeks. Watch them here.
7. EVENT: Broadway Backwards 7
The seventh annual Broadway event that's custom-made for the LGBT folks and their friends. Some of the biggest names on Broadway will perform songs originally written for the opposite gender, but by keeping the lyrics intact, including the original pronouns, each song will take on a new dimension. The proceeds go to Broadway Cares.
March 5 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
6. MUSIC: Magnetic Fields, Love at the Bottom of the Sea
For their 10th studio album, out front man Stephen Merrit and bandmates return to their signature synth and acoustic sounds for yet another collection of infectious pop songs, including the standout tracks "Andrew in Drag" and "God Wants Us to Wait." See the band live when their U.S. tour begins March 6.
5. MUSIC: Idina Menzel, Live: Barefoot at the Symphony
The Rent icon delivers a memorable evening of song, which includes imaginative reworkings of modern tunes such as Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and the Police's "Roxanne," which she cleverly combines with Cole Porter's "Love for Sale." And then there's anthemic "Defying Gravity" from Wicked -- one of the great meetings of performer and song in Broadway's recent history. This concert -- filmed at Toronto's historic Royal Conservatory of Music -- will air on PBS Saturday, followed by an album, DVD, and digital download available Tuesday.
4. DVD: Happily Divorced: Season One
Fran Drescher gets to once again display her dazzling comic skills opposite John Michael Higgins in the first season of her TV Land sitcom (now on DVD) produced by her now-out ex-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, and loosely based on their life together. Also, Drescher will earn her bona fides as an icon to the LGBT community when she officiates the weddings of three gay couples March 6 in New York City. Watch her answer your dating questions here.
3. DVD: The Skin I Live In
Pedro Almodovar breaks away from the candy-colored kitsch that's the trademark of many of his best films with this baroque horror thriller (now on DVD) that reunites the auteur with his sexiest discovery, Antonio Banderas. The Spanish heartthrob is magnetic as a mad doctor who uses his isolated estate to hide a suicidal patient in a body stocking. That's just the beginning of this complex, often witty, frequently shocking cinematic labyrinth.
2. PERFORMANCE: Miss Coco Peru: There Comes a Time
As a benefit for L.A.'s Gay and Lesbian Center, the relentlessly talented Peru will reprise her hit show from last spring in which she finds rich comic material in the memorial for her late pal Bea Arthur and her own her turn as the original Angel in the "backers' audition" of Rent. At the center's Renberg Theatre through March 4.
1. DVD: Kink Crusaders
No matter what your fetish is, someone out there wants you. You might find him if you dare, venture behind the scenes at the annual International Mr. Leather competition, where men from around the world gather to compete for the title of Mr. Leather. For his fascinating documentary (now on DVD) director Mike Skiff incorporates interviews (some heartbreaking) with competitors and onlookers to create a compelling peek into this subculture that inches closer and closer to bursting into the mainstream. Watch the trailer here.
