The LGBT allies join the live-action version of the queer-favorite '80s cartoon

Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis, two actresses who have repeatedly shown support for LGBT causes, have been cast in the upcoming Jem live-action feature, reports the Los Angeles Times. Their specific roles have not yet been announced.

The film is based on a 1980s cartoon of the same name, which followed Jerrica Benton, her pop idol alter ego Jem, and her band the Holograms as they share adventure and fame around the globe. Details about the film version are limited, but reports say it will be updated for the social media age, centering on an orphan who, after becoming a viral video sensation, embarks on a quest throughout Southern California to discover her birth father.

Both Ringwald and Lewis have been longtime supporters of the LGBT community. In addition to filming a public service announcement against California's Proposition 8, Ringwald served as grand marshal of the 2012 Los Angeles Gay Pride parade. Lewis starred in Melissa Etheridge's "Come to My Window" music video in the mid-1990s and has performed at benefits for the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.

Since it originally aired in the 1980s, Jem has maintained a strong gay fan base, many of whom have turned to social media to share their ideas for the film. Here's hoping that the final cut reflects the spirit and diversity of its cast and followers.
