How Gay Are MTV’s Best Kiss Nominees This Year?
The nominations for the MTV Movie and TV Awards 2023 are now live, and many fan favorites have been recognized. In the scripted programming category, The Last of Us, Stranger Things, and Top Gun: Maverick dominated the field. A few of the Best Actor and Actress nominees included Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, Selena Gomez, Austin Butler, and many more.
The MTV Movie Awards tradition is to award a film or television kiss the Best Kiss trophy every year. Among the previous LGBTQ-inclusive winners of this category are Moonlight and Love, Simon.
In addition to picking up a nomination for the ‘Best Performance in a Show’ category thanks to her role in Only Murders in the Building, Selena Gomez also picked up a nomination for ‘Best Kiss’ for her smooch with out actor and model Cara Delevingne on the show.
The in-action tonsil hockey played by Harry Styles and David Dawson on My Policemanis also nominated for the Best Kiss award.
There were also two other nominations for their face-to-face intimacy in the category, which were given to pansexual actress Madison Bailey and Rudy Pankow from Outer Banks.
Despite this, many fans felt that some people who were not nominated for awards were unfairly left out of the nominations.
Many were surprised that Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman’s relationship in The Last of Us, which had been well received among the gay community, was not nominated in the category. Recently, there was quite a stir on the internet when Ellie (Bella Ramsey) kissed Riley on the show for the first time. While that scene was not nominated either, The Last of Us was nominated in the Best Kiss category for a moment that did not include LGBTQ+ characters. In response to this snub, fans have called foul on the decision.
The MTV Movie and TV Awards will be hosted by Drew Barrymore and broadcast live from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, from 8 p.m. ET/PT.
